Running from Sodom

Bible Reading:  Genesis 19: 12-26

Memory Verse:  “Remember Lot’s Wife.” Luke 17:32

Did you ever wish you could see an angel? Sometimes God sends angels when He has a very important message or job.

Two angels came to a man named Lot with a terrible message.  God said that the city of Sodom became so wicked, he was going to destroy it. Sodom must have really been horrible, because God rarely did something like this.

Lot, Abraham’s nephew, lived in the city with his wife and two daughters. The angels came to his house with this message.

“Run for your lives into the mountains,” they told him.  “Don’t look back and don’t stop or you will be destroyed.”

After Lot’s family ran out, God rained down fire and sulfur on Sodom and Gomorrah behind them.

Lot’s wife disobeyed. Maybe she thought about all she had left in the city; her friends, her things, her past. The moment she disobeyed and turned around, she turned into a pillar of salt.

Lot’s family had to leave without their mom. Jesus told us to “Remember Lot’s wife,” because she was rescued from destruction, but her heart stayed in Sodom. He set us free from sin. Why do we want to go back?

A double-minded man lives partly for God, but likes the darkness too.  Part of him wants to serve God, but he doesn’t want to leave the old ways behind. It’s a dangerous place to be, because you stop walking with God.

Lot’s wife lost her life because of her two minds.  Instead, let’s choose to serve and follow Jesus with everything.

What about you?

Are there parts of your life that are hard to give to God? Music? TV shows? Friendships?

What promises of God do you remember that helps you keep your focus?

Prayer:  Father, help me to keep my eyes on you and follow you with all my heart.  In Jesus name I pray.  Amen.
